Strategic Management Of Starbucks Marketing Essay
Strategic Management Of Starbucks Marketing Essay The aim of this project report is to critically analyse the strategic issues being faced by an organization. The organization chosen for this task is the company Starbucks, which will be analysed using relevant concepts reviewed in the module using appropriate theory and models. The report structure would start with a brief introduction to the company Starbucks followed by the strategic issues faced by the firm. The issues are outlined before in the report based on the analysis which has been carried out using the above models. After discussing the current and recent issues facing Starbucks the company analysis would follow which would be supported with relevant theory and application of suitable models. After completing the industry analysis conclusion and recommendations would be provided for Starbucks to counter the strategic problems. The Starbucks Company was founded in Seattle in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker and Zev Seigel with a vision to educate American consumers about the fine coffee drinking experience. In 1987 Howard Schultz took over the Starbucks Group, he wanted to create the Italian espresso bar experience in America by creating a personal relationship between the customers and their coffee. Just within a couple of years they grew from a small coffee business house to a multi-million dollar player in the industry by buying only the best coffee available and providing the people with an unmatched store experience. As standing, Starbucks is number one in the speciality coffee industry, with more than 12,000 shops in more than 35 countries. The Starbucks mission statement is To inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time. Freshly brewed coffee is the main product offered by Starbucks along with other drinks which include cold and hot teas, cakes and pastries. The Starbucks coffee comes in a many varieties each possessing a different taste, aroma and flavour. In addition to its extensive product offerings, Starbucks has many brands including; Starbucks Hear Music, Tazo Tea, Starbucks Entertainment, , Ethos Water, Torrefazione Italia coffee and Seattles Best Coffee. The successful management of all of these brands pulled together constitutes the Starbucks portfolio. Starbucks is also one of the most globally conscious corporations in the world.à à In 2006 Starbucks donated $36.1 million in cash and products, volunteered 383,000 hours in local communities, required growers to use strict environmental guidelines, used 20% renewable energy in stores, and actively recycled in almost 80% of stores in US and Canada. Starbucks has established itself as the coffee leader in the world and has done so on a socially and environmentally conscious platform.à STRATEGIC ISSUES FACING STARBUCKS The major challenge that Starbucks is dealing with is the current financial crisis in the world economy forcing them to call closures of many stores around the world. Another challenge that Starbucks is dealing with is competitors. There are numerous coffee shops all over the world and being able to stand out to generate customers is important. Their main competitors are Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, and Nestle in the US and brands like Costa Coffee and Caffà ¨ Nero in the UK, the two major markets for Starbucks. It is important that for Starbucks to know their competitors and what they are currently doing. Also Starbuck coffees are priced higher than other market competitors because of Starbucks only purchasing the highest quality coffee beans for their product, thus increasing the price of the drink giving the competitors a cost advantage over Starbucks. Also Starbucks inadequate marketing strategy on advertising is a hindrance in the business growth opportunities. They prefer to build the brand by promoting the drinks cup-by-cup with customers. The advertisement ends until they drink the coffee, reducing the chances to attract valuable customers. Starbucks also does not emphasize on distributing their products to supermarket because of being concerned with the quality of the coffee; if the coffees were packaged into plastic bags. Also the rigorous expansion strategy followed by Starbucks can take a toll on the firms brand image. As corporations grow there can be a tendency to focus too heavily on increasing output and locations, and less focus on quality and brand image. Starbucks needs to stay with its values and ideals that have made it successful. Also Starbucks policy of not franchising can be a cause of concern for the firm. Advantages of Starbucks franchising would be to open hundreds of new stores with less risk to the company, and make profits in doing so. In addition Starbucks would have less research and development costs because the franchisee would have greater knowledge of the local market in terms of demographics, psychographics, geographic, and local/state/country regulations. Consumption of coffee is not dependent on the price of the product but also on the differentiation between each product and several value adding variables such as the quality of customer services, brand, brand recognition and image of the company. Hence, Starbucks is not majorly sensitive to movements of other firms in this segment. 2. THREAT OF NEW ENTRANTS Starbuck is the world leader in its industry and has controlled access to distribution channels. Starbucks have exhibited this control over distribution channels by setting guidelines for their suppliers to follow. Starbucks is also constantly innovating and showing strong product differentiation to hamper the possibility of new entrants. However, the entry barrier for the industry is relatively low and any big firm where capital is not a problem could be a potential entrant. Some of the more current and on-going threats of new entrants include fast food chains such as McDonalds, Burger King and Dunkin Donuts which can become a major problem in the near future. 3. BARGAINING POWER OF BUYERS A big threat to Starbucks is the absence of switching costs in the speciality coffee industry, customers face no switching costs in switching from Starbucks to Costa Coffee or Caffà © Nero for a cup of coffee. Another threat to Starbucks is that their customers have the ability to brew their own coffee. Starbucks has tried to counter this threat by offering Preferred Office Coffee Providers as well as directions on how to make the perfect cup of Starbucks coffee at home, called the Four Fundamentals of Coffee. The perfect cup of Starbucks Coffee includes, of course, Starbucks ingredients! Also with new entrants and competitors such as McDonalds who claim to offer premium roast coffee of reasonable quality for lower price, it is clear that Starbucks customers have some bargaining power in the industry. 4. BARGAINING POWER OF SUPPLIERS Coffee is the worlds second largest traded commodity. South and Central America produce the majority of coffee traded in the world. Starbucks depends upon both outside brokers and direct contact with exporters for the supply of premium coffee beans. The quality of coffee beans sought by Starbucks is very high, proving to be a potential threat to the company. Only suppliers who can meet Starbucks coffee standards will be able to supply the giant company. The supplying industry only has few firms which can deliver the quality giving them considerable bargaining powers. However, Starbucks counters this due to its massive size and being the primary buyer and also because of the importance of Starbucks business to any individual supplier as it would account for a large percentage of the total suppliers sales, thus reducing the bargaining power of suppliers. Starbucks has to effectively pursue a Focus-Based Strategy in conjunction with differentiation and a cost leadership based strategy. Being a lower cost store will increase the difference between Starbucks and provide it with a competitive edge. At present, Starbucks competitors are attempting to specialize in the coffee business, therefore Starbucks must pursue focus strategy to increase its strength. Starbucks must reduce their product price by producing a new product of coffee using cheaper beans or can come out with special discounts and promotions to reduce cost, thus increasing sales enabling Starbucks to enter new low cost markets and increase profitability. Also needs to focus on building alliances in new markets/countries to reduce management focus and benefit from the local and experience curves. Should focus on advertising the brand through internet services for users to access, do road shows, hand out brochures etc. so that consumers become more aware of the brands strong international presence and brand name. Market penetration and market development will help increase the sales. Access unexplored distribution channels like making available packaged Starbucks coffee for consumers by displaying it nationwide in various convenience and shopping stores and not only Starbucks stores. Starbucks must adopt twin policies of Product Development and Product-Market Diversification to counter the stiff competition in international markets. It is important to understand this in the product development phase as they would need to focus solely on making their existing products better. The company can demonstrate product and market diversification through research and development coupled with creativity and innovation. Product differentiation has proven an excellent defence against threats such as bargaining power of buyers. Developing new products will offset such potential risks. A strategy should be formulated to tackle the competition by entering into agreements, long-term contracts, with the food service companies that they are competing against. This way their coffee would be sold at these outlets and they would gain access to new markets and increase sales while decreasing competition. Starbucks should continue to be a first mover into markets with new products and ideas. Being a first mover of new products into new international markets will be an excellent way for Starbucks to build customer loyalty and uphold its image as an innovative company. Starbucks should continue to locate their operations in high traffic areas, high visibility areas. The company should continue to take excellent care in picking locations. It is extremely important that Starbucks international stores reflect uniqueness in their location and layout. Having locations in a variety of locations will ensure large market exposure.

Rocky Essay -- Personal Narrative
Rocky If you were to see Rocky for the first time and you were anything like most people, you would be overcome by a feeling of repugnancy and disgust. This is because he is a homeless person. His real name is Jack but people call him ââ¬Å"Rockyâ⬠because of his 6ââ¬â¢2â⬠body and his somewhat larger than normal muscles. He doesnââ¬â¢t have the body of any average man. The combination of his light green eyes, his long brown beard, and his long mocha hair falling down from his winter hat, which he wears in every season, reminds me of a depiction of Jesus. But thatââ¬â¢s just pure physical appearance. Most of the time, the hair around the rim of his mouth is covered by whatever food he just ate. Sometimes itââ¬â¢s white rice, sometimes itââ¬â¢s powder like that from a donut, but most of the time itââ¬â¢s just a mess and I canââ¬â¢t tell what it is. Heââ¬â¢s a homeless clown, for lack of a better word. He likes to make people laugh, and often jokes around. As he smiles he displays a naked mouth. His two front teeth are missing and most of the others sit rotting away. He mumbles words almost to the point where itââ¬â¢s incohe...

St. Joan of Arc biography
Arc is not only widely known all over the world for her trust in God, but for her outrageous bravery. In this heroic story of Saint Joan of Arc, everyone will be inspired for the courage of this young lady, who laid her life down for her faith, and for her country. Born to devout Catholic parents Jacques d'art and Isabella Rome, SST. Joan of Arc was born on January 6, 1412 in the small village of Dormer, France. She was one of five children which lived on a fifty acre farm which was in the north-eastern part of France. In 1412 at the age of twelve, Joan experienced visions when she was alone in field. The angels of Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and Saint Margaret the Virgin, had appeared to her and told her to drive out the English in France. She was very surprised that the angels had appeared to her, a woman, to do such a Job. When she was sixteen years old, she went to see Count Robert De Bureaucratic, who was an army commander in the town of Vacuoles, to get permission to see the royal French court. Count Robert De Bureaucratic did not take her seriously and made a Joke of Joan and her visions. He then sent her home.Along with two other en in January 1429, she returned to have a meeting with the Count to tell him a prediction she had made about an upcoming battle. When Joan was proved right about her prediction, Count Robert De Bureaucratic granted her permission to have a meeting with the Charles VI'. She dressed up as a man and was then escorted along with six other men to Chino. During the private conference with Charles VI', he was very impressed with Joan and her ideas. She also won the favor with Charles' mother- in-law and she was sent on an expedition to Orleans. They thought of her as their only source of light and hope in the hard times of France. After multiple years of the French being humiliated in battle, Joan yet again asked a favor of Charles VI'. She requested for herself to be placed as one of the commanders of t he French army. He granted her request by acknowledging the fact that every single one of his plans and strategies have failed, and there was a need for a new plan. Joan then took control of the army, with her intelligent strategies and tactics, and proceeded to win many battles. With Joan in command, the war was reversed, in favor of the French. She showed outrageous courage and bravery by the many things that she has done in battle. She was also very determined by fighting even after being wounded in the neck by an arrow. The victory of the battle of Orleans was only one of the many battles won. The victory led to the necessity of more offensive action. She then persuaded Charles VII once again, by placing her in co-command of the entire army with Duke John II of Alnico. On May 23, 1430 Joan was captured during an attempted attack and was held a prisoner of war.She was unable to be released by Charles VIII not intervening with he Duke Philip of Burgundy. Charles VII and the French did not try to save her. She tried to escape many times even by Jumping from a seventy foot tower in which she was held in. Later, the English government then bought Joan for ten thousand francs from Duke Philip of Burgundy and put her under trial. While under trial, Joan was mainly accused of being a heretic, sorceress, and adulteress. People have tried to collect testimony against her, but they could not find any evidence.Along with the insufficient evidence, the court violated ecclesiastical law by denying her the right to have a legal advisor. The trial had tried many times to accuse Joan of different laws broken, but her intelligence had proved them wrong. Under certain guidelines, Joan should of been placed in an ecclesiastical prison under the supervision of nuns, but instead, he was held in a secular prison and was guarded by actual solders. In conclusion to her trial, she was condemned and sentenced to burn at stake. On May 30, 1941, only being 19 years old, she was tied to o tall pillar in front of a large crowd. Before being tied, she had asked clergymen to hold a crucifix before her while he would be consumed by the burning fire. Immediately after her body had finished burning, the English had burned her remains once more, so that her bodily remains would only be ashes. Afterwards, they castes her remains into the nearby river called the Seine. About 24 years past Jean's death, the Hundred Years' War had ended. The weak rule of the young King Henry VI ended the war between France and England. Her ultimate goal of bringing Charles VII was successful. In 1452, Jean's case had been put on retrial by Pope Casualties Ill.The main issues f the retrial was to investigate if the original trial had been handled Justly or not. Many different clergymen conducted this investigation, and in June 1456, the court declared her innocent. In conclusion, it wasn't until 1909 when Joan was beatified. On May 16, 1920, she was cannonaded a saint and martyr in the Holy Rom an Catholic Church by Pope Benedict W. Her saint name is now Saint Joan of Arc and is the patron saint of soldiers and France. Also, Many Catholics around the world look up to Saint Joan of Arc as a role model and inspiration. Her feast day is celebrated on May 30th every year.

The Tragic Tragedy Of William Shakespeare s Othello
Tragedy is described as a drama that has pain, suffering, and loss. In the Merriam- Webster dictionary, we can see tragedy being defined a ââ¬Å"disastrous eventâ⬠(Webster). We also see in the dictionary that a serious drama that involves a heroââ¬â¢s downfall and an unhappy ending can also be classified as a tragedy. Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher, provides a more comprehensive definition of tragedy based on drama in a play. Kennedy Gioia gives us, Aristotleââ¬â¢s definition of a tragedy that says ââ¬Å"is an imitation of action of high importance, complete and of some amplitude; in language enhanced by distinct and varying of beauties; acted not narrated; by means of pity and fear effecting its purgation of these emotions.â⬠(Kennedy Gioiaâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another one of Othelloââ¬â¢s flaw was the fact that he can be easily fooled or tricked into believing anything. Othello is just like any other heroes in a play or tragedy. Aristotle states in his definition of a tragic hero that the hero must have a tragic flaw as one of his characteristics. Kennedy Gioia points this out in Aristotleââ¬â¢s definition of tragic hero that ââ¬Å"the hero downfall is the results of his flaw or weakness of characterâ⬠(Kennedy Gioia 905). Othello was able to be deceived by man who he believed was a friend to him, but Iago only wanted to bring Othello down because of his hatred for Othello. It was because this character flaw that Othello was able to murder his own wife. Iago said that Othello has a ââ¬Å"free and open nature, that thinks men honest that but seem to be so, / And will as tenderly be led by the noseâ⬠(1.3.376-378). Itââ¬â¢s because of this character flaw that Iago can bring Othello s downfall when Othello starts to believe Iago lies about his wife having an affair. Iago plants the seed of doubt about Othello s wife having an affair with his second in command, Cassio. Iago says to Othello to â⬠Å"Look to your wife; observe her well with Cassio.â⬠(3.3.211). Wild Ructions in Commodity Markets
Question: Discuss about the Wild Ructions in Commodity Markets. Answer: Introduction: For some time now, the price of gas in Australia has been rising significantly. Mainly, this is attributed to the fact that gas supplies in the country have reduced dramatically whereas its demand remains high. By and large, this has made gas very expensive in the country as helpless customers are forced to endure, thanks to the system of profiteering and collusion in the industry. For this reason, Matt Chambers (2017), in his article fears of a winter gas shortage as price skyrocket explains how forces of demand and supply for gas will result in significant increases in the price of the commodity. It is fundamental to note that the incoming winter season in the country is expected to experience more gas shortages characterized by very high prices. According to Chambers (2017), the price of gas in the country will continue to rise if there is a cold winter. Mainly, this is because there will be extra demand for the product from gas-fired power stations, thereby leaving limited amounts for other users. Most power stations in the country have entered into long term contracts with large, commercial and industrial users whose demand for gas is relatively large. In turn, this may result in significant shortages of the product in the country. Economic theory opines that an increase in demand over and above the available supply results in significant shortages of a product. In turn, the available supply can only satisfy the needs of few individuals, who then compete fiercely for the product. Subsequently, this brings about substantial rises in the price of the commodity. In the same way, Chambers (2017) forecasts that the Australian economy may experience significant increases in the demand for the product while its supply may remain relatively constant during the winter period. It is imperative to note that Chambers (2017) explains that the increased demand for the product mainly originates from the $80 million boom time LNG investments in Queensland. Characteristically, the investment has led to an increase in the demand for the product in the east coast. He explains that LNG projects are consuming large volumes of gas at a flat rate and thus considered better customers than individual households. For this reason, they are granted volume discounts, making it difficult for other small businesses and individual users of gas to compete with them for gas supplies. In addition, the expected cold winter in the country is bound to increase the demand for heat in the country. Subsequently, the increased demand for heat sources will bring about a significant increase in demand for gas, especially among households and businesses. More specifically, there will be an increase in demand for both physical gas and gas-fired generation (Chambers, 2017). Mainly, the demand will be as a result of the cold weather, forcing households to look for alternative sources of heat for their homes and enterprises. Indeed, this will raise the demand substantially. While the demand for gas is expected to increase, its supply is projected to remain relatively constant during this period. So far, the reduction in the supply of gas in the country has been due to the subsequent closure of Hazelwood. Thus, southern Australia will live through winter without the supply of gas from Hazelwood (Chambers, 2017). In turn, this has significantly reduced the available supply of gas in the country (Lane, n.d.). In addition, the available supply in the country has further been reduced due to the fact that plants such as Gladstones Curtis Island export a substantial amount gas from the country, thereby reducing the available supply in the country (Holditch and Chianelli, 2008). Thus, this has significantly affected the total supply in the country by reducing the availability of the product to small enterprises and households. Chambers (2017) further traces the genesis of the reduced supply of gas to the fact that the southeast region of Australia is hit hard by insufficient gas supply due to the existence of few suppliers in the area. Currently, the main supplier of gas in the region is the Exxon-Mobil-BHP Billiton partnership that owns and controls the Bass Strait gas fields (Chambers, 2017). Thus, they control the overall supply of gas in the region (Chambers, 2017). In the event that the partnership decides to limit and hoard gas supplies, the region is bound to suffer substantially (Stewart, 2017). Thus, buyers in the southeast are forced to obtain their gas from other regions such as Queensland (Chambers, 2017). Notably, this element has substantially affected the supply of gas in the region, thereby causing shortages of the commodity. It is imperative to point out the fact that the increased demand for the product amidst a constricted supply is bound to cause shortages during the impending cold winter. In agreement with the law of demand, Chambers (2017) further narrates how the increase in demand for gas in the country during the winter period will result in subsequent shortages of the commodity in the. In turn, this will result in significant increases in the price of the commodity. Particularly, the low supply of gas will force households and consumers to compete for the available supply of gas in the country (Hopkins, 2017). In turn, this will create pressure on the price of the product, thereby raising it significantly. Notably, the prices of gas in the country have already risen in the past few months, and a further upsurge will make the product expensive due to unsustainable prices (Sier, 2017). Conclusion All in all, all factors considered Australia is going to experience significant shortages in the supply of gas. Primarily, this will be as a result of an increase in demand for the commodity during the winter season while the supply of the product is expected to remain minimal. By and large, the high demand for the product is caused by the recent LNG investments in Queensland which has set demand off the peak. In addition, during the cold winter period, individuals are bound to increase their demand for heat generation, thereby enhancing the demand for the product. Unfortunately, the supply of gas is relatively inelastic. Consequently, this will result in further rises in the price of gas in the country. References Chambers, M. (2017).
